Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in South India. It is located in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, deep within the Periyar Tiger Reserve, surrounded by the lush forests and hills of the Western Ghats and pamba river . Sitting at an altitude of over 3,000 feet above sea level, Sabarimala is not only spiritually significant but also ranks among the largest annual pilgrimage destinations in the world.The temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, also known as Dharma Sashta, who is believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and Mohini a female form of Lord Vishnu. According to legend, Sage Parasurama, another form of Vishnu, installed the idol of Ayyappa at the top of the hill.
The customs and traditions at Sabarimala are unique, blending elements from Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism, and ancient Sramana practices. The temple is also located near what is known as Thriveni Sangamam, the meeting point of three rivers.Pilgrims must undertake a challenging trek through forested paths to reach the Sannidhanam, where 18 sacred steps lead them to worship Lord Ayyappa. Devotees are required to observe strict celibacy and follow a 41-day penance before undertaking the pilgrimage.
